Another part of remaking your life is getting the right gear. A few weeks ago I placed an order with http://www.thinkgeek.com/ , and I am ready to review it.  I ordered:

Mag Pix 1080p HD Mini Camcorder
Timmy’s Tactical Attaché
Static Electricity Eliminator
Caffeine Molecule Stainless Travel Mug
Chargers Chocolate Espresso Beans – Single Pack
Dr. Timmy’s Micro Hand-cranked LED Torch

The Mag Pix 1080p HD Mini Camcorder was the reason I placed this order, and unless otherwise noted all photos in this blog for the foreseeable future will be taken with it, unless it is noted different. I am not a camera/camcorder buff so I do not fully understand what “full 1080p widescreen with 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution” means, but I do understand that I love the results. My last video camera was stolen, and the only thing I miss is it’s “night-shot” and “steady-cam” functions.

I am still surprised by how small and light it is, yet it still has a very impressive high-res 2.4″ LCD Display! The above photos of the camera were shot in 3264 x 2448. I was only able to shoot a little over a half hour of video in it’s highest resolution with my 2GB card, but it’s SD card slot supports up to a 32GB card. ThinkGeek says it can record for up to 160 minutes at the full 1080p resolution. If that is right then I would have only been able to record 10 minutes of video, a third of what I got. Guys, is this right or am I shooting at a lower resolution?

Could someone please leave a comment about where I can get the best deal on a 32GB SD card? Also the box is pretty undiscriptive of who makes this camera, can someone please tell me? This camera is defiantly worth investing in, and I can not wait to order some extra accessories including some extra batteries!

The Timmy’s Tactical Attaché was bought to replace my book bag. I have four college majors, so I need something big and tough. My initial reaction was disappointment because it looked bigger online than in real life. As you can see in the following photo, my initial reaction was wrong.

My new ballistic nylon police-issue satchel.

The tactical bail out gear bag appears bigger on the inside than the ouside.

Even after adding 40 pounds of gear, this bail out bag is still asking for more. This bag works, does anything else matter?

The Static Electricity Eliminator is an odd thing.

Static Electricity Eliminator

The instructions are in Japanese, but it’s pretty simple. Does anyone else have one of these?

I do not have a photo of the Caffeine Molecule Stainless Travel Mug or the Chargers Chocolate Espresso Beans because they are Valentines gifts. I got the Firefighter gloves in the photo above in return. Here is a special tip for the rest of you guys. If you want to make sure you got a woman’s attention, head over to the ThinkGeek website to get her something that reflects something you like about her. Then you give it to her a day early, and I repeat this to drive my point home, give her something from ThinkGeek that she can not get anywhere else, and you do not give it to her on the special day, because you give her the gift the day before she is expecting it. You tell her that someone as special as her should not have to wait another day to receive a special gift. Then you follow up the next day, the day she would normally get a gift with something you cooked yourself like:

If you can not cook, then flowers and chocolate can also work. I suggest an “I Love You Bean” and Buzz Strong’s Caffeinated Cookies.

I got the Dr. Timmy’s Micro Hand-cranked LED Torch

for free with my Geek points.

The accessory of the era for your steampunk ensemble

If you look to your right, you see the SwissTech also from ThinkGeek. You can tell that I use it a LOT!

This item arrived a couple hours before the power went out due to a snow storm. This item has been very useful, and could not have arrived at a better time. You may not know that such a coincidence is true; I am glad I ordered it when I did.

As soon as I can afford to place another order, I want to get
The Bag of Holding Messenger Bag” and use my Geek points to get “BuckyBalls” the magnetic building spheres! Aslo I hope to be able to get a Deluxe Mini Fridge-Warmer w/ Digital Thermostat. But until I can save up for it, my Geek Heart can only dream about it.

5th month, 7th day; Body Mass Index is down 9 points!

February 7, 2010

As I mentioned in my first post: https://startinganewday.wordpress.com/2009/09/01/day-one/ my BMI was 45!
My Current BMI is 36.38, and I have lost 43 lbs. so far!

I watched one of the episodes of the Doctors tonight. It was about will power, the biggest loser, sugar, and four things to avoid. They talked about an experiment where mice that were fed artificial sweetener gained more weight than the ones that ate sugar. I need to look into this more. I do know they mentioned scientists at Purdue University studying an artificial sweetener, I think it was sacerine? Any information on this would be appreciated!

Besides replacing artificial sweetener with honey and agave, the four things to avoid were:
1. Trans Fat, which can be hidden with smaller portion sizes. Look out for “Partially Hydrogenated”.
2. Refined grains, which is usually labeled as enriched.
3. High fructose corn syrup, which may just be labeled as corn syrup.
4. Excessive sodium, which is salt.

Day 135 – ProForm Adjustable Stride Elliptical

January 13, 2010

I am finally ready to post my review on the ProForm Adjustable Stride Elliptical. I took a while to make sure it would hold up, and it is holding up well. The thing I like most about it is that it has easy controls. The biggest drawback is that it is noisy.

Day 103 – The Truth of Dieting

December 13, 2009

First of all, I have gained back 5 of the 36 pounds I had lost. I could easily blame this on the stress and not being able work out due to finals. I could also easily shift the blame to the candy corn, pumpkin pie, and eggnog I posted about on November 5th ( https://startinganewday.wordpress.com/2009/11/05/harvest-holidays/ ). But ultimately it’s nobody’s fault but my own, and it only further proves what I always tell everyone “There is no Magic Pill. There is no fool proof plan. There is no automatic success.”.

There are three parts to losing weight: “Temperance, Fortitude, and Prudence”.

  • Temperance is the virtue of being able to avoid the gluttonous urge to give in to your appetite for the pleasure of your senses. This means having self control when you are eating. This does not mean that you have to give anything up for good, but simply knowing when to say no.
  • Fortitude is the virtue of being able to bear pain or adversity in your life. Yes exercising can be painful, especially when you are out of shape, but it will not get better if you do not keep at it. Also there will be adversities in your way like sickness, lack of time, and people telling you to give up; but you have to have the fortitude to work though it. Laying on the couch may make you feel better right now, but exercise will help you feel better in the long run.
  • Prudence is the virtue of being able to able to judge which actions are appropriate at a given time. There may be left over pizza and beer in the fridge, but if you just woke up and need to leave for a long day of work soon, a nutritional shake is more appropriate. This does not mean you can not have any of the candy corn on Halloween, have to pass on the pumpkin pie at Thanksgiving, can not try the eggnog at the Christmas party, etc . . . It means that the next morning it is more appropriate to have something more nutritional than immediately eating all of the leftovers at once.

Also I got a tweet from RealAge that was retweeted from @KathleenShow about a post they had made on their blog. The blog is called “Prevention Not Prescriptions”. I agree with them about having it “up to here!” with people turning to prescription drugs as a quick fix for everything without even trying to do something for themselves. The way I see it is there are too many people who believe it is a fool proof plan to pop a prescription drug and automatically fix all their problems, this goes back to my saying “There is no Magic Pill, there is no fool proof plan, and there is no automatic success.”. This does not mean I do not take prescription drugs when I need them, but I do not rush to the doctor and demand them every time I think something is wrong. Also I look for non-prescription options. For example, as I read “Prevention Not Prescriptions” I noticed I had a nasal spray beside my laptop. It is a homeopathic allergy spray that contains capsaicin and nettle ; I am using it because the prescription allergy spay I had used made me groggy. There’s a slight sting to this alternative, but it does not slow me down.

The blog is also asking for feedback like:

  • The advice I gave to mix up your exercise by doing some gardening. ( https://startinganewday.wordpress.com/2009/10/30/day-60/ )
  • The personal anecdote I gave about Harvest Holidays. ( https://startinganewday.wordpress.com/2009/11/05/harvest-holidays/ )
  • The commentary on Burger King and Microsoft introduction of the “Windows 7 Whopper”. ( https://startinganewday.wordpress.com/2009/10/24/day-53/ )
  • Or anything else related to fitness, stress, or nutrition; for example see one of my “progress reports”. ( https://startinganewday.wordpress.com/2009/11/21/day-82/ )

All they ask in return is that if you have a blog entry or an article related to healthy living that you want to share; email a link to cari@prhum.com with the subject “Prevention not Prescriptions Submission”. You can do that automatically by clicking this sentence if you have an email client set up. At the time of writing this, I have not yet set up an email program on this replacement laptop, so I am going to have to copy and paste the info into my web-based e-mail service to send it. So other people can also participate, they ask that you post a link back to: http://www.thekathleenshow.com/Health/PreventionnotPrescriptions/tabid/115/Default.aspx

  • Day 96

    December 5, 2009

It’s been rough with finals, the holidays, and the console on that elliptical arrived broken so it’s not finished yet. This means lack of sleep, too much food, and no exercise. This has not been good for my diet.

    Day 82

    November 21, 2009

It’s been a little over a week since my last post because I have been busy studying for finals and building that elliptical.

    First checkup.

    Second checkup.

I apologize for the poor scans, my college has some that don’t really work, so it’s hit and miss. I never know what I’ll get till I can check them at home. I really need to get my own scanner. Does anyone have any suggestions or tips on buying a scanner?

    Day 70

    November 9, 2009

I’ve been busy because my Elliptical came. I was glad it came with free shipping, until it was delivered. The UPS freight truck stopped in front of the house, and that’s when I found out that the free delivery was only free curb delivery. This Elliptical is almost 200 pounds, in a box large enough to hold 3 of me, and the weight is not even; so I had to carry it piece by piece up the drive way, around the house, and down into the basement. I’ll let you know how it works when I get it built.

    Harvest Holidays

    November 5, 2009

First of all, the holidays in the fall like Halloween are not pagan rites and have less to do with Celtic Druids as candy corn has to do with corn. These holidays during the harvest season have nothing to do with pagans, witches, or devil worshiping. Halloween originated with American Christians and that is why my online friends who are not American do not know much about, care about, or celebrate Halloween. Try it for yourself, and you will see that Halloween is an American idea, not some ancient festival.

Halloween falls on October 31st because most early American Christians were Catholic. All Hallow’s Day falls on November 1st. The definition of “eve” means the period immediately preceding, usually the evening or day before a holiday; like Midsummer’s Eve (Bonfire Night) for example. Since November 1st is All Halllow’s Day, the day before is October 31st making it All Hallows Eve. Halloween is short for All Hallows Eve. All Halllow’s Day is not Pagan or Druidic, so All Hallows Eve is not Pagan or Druidic, which means Halloween is not Pagan or Druidic.

While there was some ancients that recognised a minor festival on October the 31st, they also did the same thing on the last day on almost every month of the year. October the 31st was nothing special to them. As I said, Halloween falls on the last day of October because the Feast of All Saints, also called “All Hallows Day” falls on November the 1st.

All Hallows Day used to be celebrated on May 13, but Pope Gregory III moved it to November the 1st because it is the dedication day of All Saints Chapel in St. Peter’s at Rome. Then in the 840s, Pope Gregory IV commanded that All Saints be observed everywhere spreading All Hallow’s Day to Ireland. The day before was the feast’s evening vigil, “All Hallows Even” or “Hallowe’en.”

Even after the 840s, Halloween was just the day before All Hallows Day, and meant nothing more to Christians, and even less to pagans. Also of note is that St. Odilo made the next day (November the 2nd) “All Souls Day” in 998. This means that even in the year 998 Halloween was nothing like it is today. These historical facts prove that untill the 20th century, Halloween was no different than St. Mark’s Eve.

In the same way as how most people today have not even heard of St. Mark’s Eve, it has only been in the past millennium that people have heard of Halloween. This time scale makes it impossible for druids, pagans, witches, or anyone else to have even known what Halloween was because it did not exist, much less celebrate it in ancient time. Even if Halloween was an ancient festival, any non-christians would have carred about it as much as modern pagans care about St. Mark’s Eve.

Candy corn is made of honey and was created in the 1880s by George Renninger of the Wunderlee Candy Company. Each piece mimics a kernel from a dried ear North American corn in shape, size, and color.
